TRALEE FIANNA EIREANN 1913

NA FIANNA EIREANN TRALEE TROOP

An interesting and notable feature of the large gathering that witnessed the football and hurling contests at the Tralee Sportsfield on Sunday (22nd June 1913) was the presence of a number of the Tralee Troop of the Irish National Boy Scouts, about half of whom were in uniform. As they marched through the town, on their way to the field, the neat uniforms and the trim and smart turn-out evoked the admiration and well-wishes of the onlookers.

It is pleasing to know that though only a short time in existence, the Tralee Troop has made rapid progress, and when it is understood that each boy has to procure his own uniform- the Troop receiving no outside financial aid- the fine turn-out on Sunday is praiseworthy and hopeful sign of the Fianna movement in Tralee.

We wish the Tralee Troop and its promoters every success. The motto of the Irish National Boy Scouts, like that of the Fianna of ancient Ireland- “Strength in the arm, truth on the lip, and purity in the heart“- is a noble and glorious one, and the instilling of self-reliant and manly principles and a true conception of Irish Nationality into the youth of our country is a work which deserves well of every Irish man and woman.

*The Sportsfield in Tralee was renamed Austin Stack Park in 1944, however is still known to many locals as The Sportsfield.
